My first ever gynea appointment | absolutely horrendous

Access to quality health care is a basic human right.

Accessing medical treatment while fat or black is a real sticky situation. Fatshaming is one thing but refusing to even listen to or examine a patient simply because they are fat is quite another thing.I was reminded of this when my mom was diagnosed with venous insufficiency and her doctor simply declared that she was too old for any type of treatment, we should just manage her pain and give her as many diuretics as it takes to get her swelling down. This did not sit well with me.I was reminded of the time when I went to 5 different doctors in Pretoria Central only to be told to lose weight, without as much as an opportunity to tell them what I was feeling.I was then introduced to Dr Pretorius in Pretoria East, who was taken aback by my opening speech of “I know that I am fat and I am well aware that this puts me at risk for a plethora of illnesses but please allow me to at least explain my symptoms to you”After thoroughly checking what was in his scope to check, he recommended this a**hole of an OBGYN. He must be a good Dr to some people because I saw high profile women in the waiting room when I went to see him.So my first gynea appointment became a dietetics lecture 😕.He drew 3 plates on a piece of paper and told me I am to have only 3 meals a day and each plate must have 1/3 protein, starch & veggies in the most condescending tone you could ever imagine. He told me that the only way he would see me was if I lost 60kg.I was pissed.I did and still do have extra pounds on me but that doesn’t mean that I am not deserving of basic medical care.Doctors ought to know and do better. So when Dr Skhosana opened his practice in Pretoria Central, it was truly a blessing to me and no doubt, many more people of my body type and size.
